Beinn Ceannabeinne

The walk up Beinn Ceannabeinne takes you from sea level near Durness straight into proper Highland terrain. It's not a long hike - most people bag the summit in under three hours - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's easy. The path climbs steeply through moorland and rough grass, and the wind can absolutely batter you once you're exposed. That said, the views from the top justify every laboured breath. You're looking out over the Kyle of Durness to the west, with Sutherland stretching inland. On a clear day - and you'll want to time your visit for one - the light hits the water differently every few minutes.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families might manage the ascent if teenagers are involved, but younger kids will find it grinding. The terrain demands proper boots and weather awareness. There's no café at the top, no facilities, nothing but rock and wind and that view. Start early because the weather can turn on you fast in this part of Scotland.

You could pair this with coastal walks around Durness itself - the beaches here are extraordinary - or push further to Cape Wrath if you've got the time. Beinn Ceannabeinne works best as part of a longer Highland itinerary rather than a standalone trip.
