Beach House Park

The reserve itself is unglamorous - no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find - which is actually part of its appeal. It rewards the kind of visitor who enjoys a quiet morning with a thermos rather than expecting ready-made entertainment.

It works best for keen birdwatchers and walkers happy to move at a slow pace. Kids might find it dull after thirty minutes unless they're already into nature spotting. Winter and early spring are peak times for watching migrants and resident waterfowl.

Stay at Onslow or Brook Lane Caravan Park, both within four miles, or Fox Wood Campsite if you want a quieter base. Neither is a theme park destination - they're practical jumping-off points for exploring the Adur Valley and Sussex coastal path. An hour here fits neatly into a wider day exploring the area, not a standalone afternoon out.
