Battle of the Standard

A flat field outside Northallerton doesn't look like much, but this is where one of England's bloodiest medieval battles unfolded in 1138. The Battle of the Standard was a proper clash between English and Scottish forces, fought over a landscape that hasn't changed dramatically in nearly 900 years. There's a modest monument marking the spot where around 10,000 men met in combat - the sheer scale of it is hard to grasp standing there.

Histor enthusiasts will find this genuinely worthwhile. You get a real sense of why this particular field mattered tactically, and the battle itself shaped the northern borders for decades to come. It's not spectacularly dramatic like some battlefields, but that's partly why it works - you're looking at actual ground where decisions were made and lives ended.

Bring proper footwear because it can get muddy. Allow 30-45 minutes, longer if you're reading up on the history beforehand. There's no visitor centre or facilities on site, so plan accordingly. Richmond, just a few miles away, has decent pubs and shops if you need them.
