Battle Lake

The water at Battle Lake sits oddly still most days, ringed by low woodland that doesn't announce itself from the road. It's a working fishery first, a casual visitor spot second - worth knowing upfront. The lake itself spans maybe thirty acres, and you can walk most of the perimeter if you're not bothered about precision paths. The name comes from a skirmish fought nearby centuries ago, though there's precious little signage to tell you about it.

You'll find a small car park and a basic facilities block. Fishing types dominate weekdays, families tend to drift in at weekends. It's the sort of place where people bring camping chairs and a flask rather than expect facilities. The walk takes a solid hour if you're dawdling, half that if you're purposeful. No great views, no dramatic banks - just a body of water that's genuinely peaceful, and increasingly rare for that reason alone.

Family groups get decent value here. Kids can run about without roads threatening, and the water's interesting enough to watch without being spectacular. Birdwatchers sometimes camp by the southern edge. It's free, as far as I can establish, and quiet enough to feel like you've found something others haven't bothered with.

Based near Swindon, it slots well alongside Park Farm Campsite just 1.6 miles away - either as a morning walk before heading elsewhere, or an evening stroll from your pitch. Not a full-day destination, but a proper tonic if you're camped locally and want an hour away from the routine.
