Battle Baptist Church

The red-brick chapel standing on the edge of Battle is one of those churches you'd probably miss if you weren't looking for it, but walking through the doors feels like stepping into genuine Sussex history. Battle Baptist Church dates back to the 1800s and sits quietly amid the town's more celebrated Norman architecture, which somehow makes it more interesting - this is the real workaday faith of ordinary people, not the grand statement stuff.

Inside, the space is intimate. High ceilings, simple wooden pews, and that particular smell of old churches that's part furniture polish, part time itself. The craftsmanship is proper - look up at the ceiling work and you'll spot the care that went into it. There's no pretension here, which is rather refreshing after ticking off the bigger attractions.

Walking round Battle itself, you're already in the thick of things with the Abbey dominating the skyline. This church works best as part of that broader wander through town rather than a specific detour. Twenty minutes inside is enough unless you're genuinely into Victorian religious architecture or the local Methodist movement.

The Original Hut Company's glamping site five miles out makes a solid base if you're camping in the area - it's close enough for exploring Battle without being trapped in the town itself. Free entry and no fiddling with opening hours makes this an easy addition to a morning in town. Worth the quick look, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
