Battery (remains of)

Crumbling red sandstone walls and overgrown gun emplacements aren't everyone's idea of a day out, but the Battery near Seaton tells a proper story of coastal defence that's worth ten minutes of your time. What remains are the fortifications built to guard against Napoleonic invasion - earthworks, a few brick structures, and views across the beach that haven't changed much in two centuries.

It's less polished than other heritage sites and that's precisely the point. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards explaining what you're looking at. You wander around thinking about what stood here, why it mattered, and how little remains when you stop maintaining something. History enthusiasts will find it fascinating; families with young kids might run out of steam quickly once they've clambered on a few walls.

The location is the real draw. Positioned between Seaton and the coastal path, it works best as a stopping point rather than a destination in itself. Twenty minutes maximum, then you're back on the trail or heading into town for lunch. The proximity to Beer Head Holiday Park means it's essentially on your doorstep if you're staying there - worth a quick explore before breakfast.

Getting there is straightforward from Seaton itself, and the walk down is manageable. Don't expect manicured gardens or facilities. Bring a camera if you're into abandoned structures, because the light hits those red walls beautifully in the late afternoon.
