Bates Wood Pool

A shallow freshwater pool tucked away near Crewe that locals have been coming to for decades. You'll find yourself surrounded by mature woodland on all sides - the kind of place where the water is genuinely still on calm days, which makes it brilliant for spotting herons and the occasional kingfisher if you're patient enough.

It's primarily a walking spot rather than a swimming venue. The pool itself isn't huge, maybe a couple of hundred metres across, but the woodland paths around it are proper nice for a gentle hour's stroll. Families with young kids will find it manageable - the main path is well-trodden and relatively flat, though there's mud if it's been wet.

The real draw here is the wildlife and peace and quiet. If you're the type who enjoys bird watching or just want somewhere to decompress away from the busy parts of the North West, this delivers. Don't expect facilities or crowds - it's a fairly no-frills kind of spot. Worth combining with a stay at Tipsy Tree Glamping, which sits about three miles away and gives you that woodsy vibe without the tent wrestling.

Timing-wise, go at dawn or dusk if you want the best chance of seeing anything interesting. Spring and autumn are cracking for migrants. There's no admission charge, no facilities to speak of, and no formal opening hours - just rock up when you fancy. Allow an hour if you're wandering the perimeter, longer if you're sitting around with binoculars.
