Bat Willow Hurst Country Park

The moment you step onto the boardwalk at Bat Willow Hurst, you're in proper wetland country. This nature reserve near Sawbridgeworth is all about water - reed beds, ditches, the works - and the wildlife that depends on it. The boardwalk itself is a godsend because the ground's boggy as anything; without it you'd be ankle-deep in mud half the year.

Birdwatchers will have the best time here, no question about it. You'll spot warblers in spring, overwintering wildfowl if you time it right, and if you're lucky - really lucky - a bittern booming across the reeds. The name gives it away though: this place is brilliant for bats. Come dusk on a summer evening and you'll see them working the insect populations over the water. Bring binoculars and a torch with a red filter if you know what's good for you.

Walking the reserve takes between forty minutes and two hours depending on which trails you fancy. It's flat, accessible, and completely free. Go early morning when the light's proper golden and the birds are most active. Mid-summer can feel a bit thin on the ground if the water levels drop.
