Bastifell

The walk up Bastifell from Kirkby Stephen takes you onto proper fell terrain without the grinding length of some of the bigger Pennine summits. It's a straightforward ascent that rewards you with views across Wensleydale and south towards the Howgill Fells - nothing spectacular enough to make your jaw drop, but solid moorland walking nonetheless.

The fell itself is modest - 454 metres - and the appeal lies more in the walk than any dramatic peak features. You'll find yourself among heather and grassland with enough height to feel genuinely out of things, despite being close to this small market town. On a clear day you can pick out some proper distance. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, so proper boots are essential.

This works well for experienced walkers and families comfortable with fell navigation. Younger children might find the exposed stretches a bit intimidating if the weather turns, and it's not the kind of climb that'll hold short attention spans. Allow two to three hours for the round trip.

It's the sort of walk that reminds you why the Pennines have their devoted followers - nothing fancy, just honest moorland and decent views. Spring through autumn work best. Winter can turn it boggy and properly exposed.
