Bascote Top Lock, Grand Union Canal

The lock chamber at Bascote is deep - properly deep - and watching a narrowboat rise or fall through it is oddly mesmerizing. You're standing on the towpath near Southam, watching water do what water's been doing here since 1799, and it feels less like a tourist tick and more like stumbling into someone's everyday life on the canal.

There's not much to it, to be honest. You walk along the Grand Union Canal, spot the lock, maybe watch someone work the gates if you're lucky, take a photo of the brickwork or the water reflecting the sky. Five minutes and you're done. But that's partly why it works. This isn't a theme park; it's infrastructure that happens to be rather beautiful in its own right.

If you're staying at Holt Farm Campsite, it's a straightforward walk from there - just over four miles along or near the canal path. Bit of a trek with small kids, but walkers will find it a natural waypoint on a longer canal-side ramble. History types get a kick out of the engineering - the lock's part of the original 1799 construction, and you can read that in the stonework.

Go on a calm day when the water's still and the light's good. Early morning works best, before the towpath gets busy. Wear decent shoes - the path can be muddy after rain. It's free, obviously, and open whenever you fancy it. Don't expect a visitor centre or a café. What you get is quiet, working history and the sound of water moving through stone.
