Bartlow Park

The Bartlow Hills rise unexpectedly from the Cambridgeshire flatlands, a string of Bronze Age burial mounds that feel properly ancient when you're standing among them. There are four of them - all you can really do is walk around the earthworks, spot the information boards, and contemplate what's underneath. No visitor centre, no café, no faffing about. Just you, some grassy humps, and fifteen hundred years of history pressing down from above.

It's a decent spot for a slow ramble, especially if you're into archaeology without needing your hand held. The walk takes maybe forty minutes to an hour depending on how much time you spend reading the interpretive boards and staring into the middle distance like you're channeling Iron Age spirits. Kids under ten might find it a bit thin on the ground - there's nowhere to run around properly, and the mounds themselves won't hold their attention for long.

You'll need to come on foot from Cambridge, which is close enough for a half-day excursion.
