Barr Mor, dun site

A steep scramble up a hillside near Taynuilt gets you to what's left of Barr Mor, an Iron Age dun that commands views over Loch Awe. The fort itself is little more than tumbled stone walls now, but what makes the visit worthwhile is understanding what you're looking at: a defensive stronghold built by people who needed high ground and sightlines. The walk up takes maybe twenty minutes depending on your fitness and how much the ground's squelching that day.

It's the kind of place that appeals far more to archaeology enthusiasts and history buffs than casual visitors. Families with young kids will probably get restless once they realise there's no interpretation board or visitor centre, just old stones and a steep path. That said, if you've got teenagers with an interest in Iron Age settlement patterns or Scottish hill forts, they'll appreciate the setting.

Free access, naturally. Allow forty minutes to an hour round trip if you're taking your time with photos and actually reading the landscape. The real payoff is standing up there looking out across the loch - it's obvious why someone chose this spot to build. Combine it with Loch Awe Camping Pods (barely a mile and a half away) if you're exploring the wider area. The Argyll landscape rewards proper poking around, and Barr Mor fits that bill. Not a destination in itself, but worth the detour if you're already nearby.
