Barnwell Castle

The ruins of Barnwell Castle rise from the Northamptonshire landscape just south of Peterborough like something from a medieval fever dream. What you're looking at is a 12th-century Norman keep - the sort of thing that stops you mid-walk because it's just suddenly there, all stone and history against the sky.

It's not a grand structure by any means. This isn't Warwick or Kenilworth. But that's precisely what makes it worth the detour. The castle stands in relative solitude, and you can actually get close to the ruins without queuing or paying through the nose. The keep itself is genuinely atmospheric - you get a proper sense of what these fortifications were about, not sanitised for mass tourism.

For walkers, this is a cracking spot to aim for. The setting is rural and quiet, which means families with restless kids will find it a decent stopping point rather than a full-day occupation. Thirty minutes to an hour is realistic. History types will appreciate the Norman architecture and the fact it's remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though conditions can be muddy depending on weather. The nearest decent facilities are back in Peterborough, so pack accordingly.

If you're based at Castle Farm Campsite or Brightside Caravan Park - both solid options within five miles - Barnwell works perfectly as a morning or afternoon walk. It's the sort of place that rewards dropping by rather than planning your whole trip around it.
