Barnarm Scar

The walk up Barnarm Scar from Kirkby Stephen is proper steep but the payoff's worth every burning calf muscle. You're looking at a limestone peak that commands views across the Pennines, and on a clear day the vista stretches far enough to make you understand why fell walkers get obsessed with this part of Cumbria.

It's not a long hike - most people manage it in under two hours return - but it's relentless. The path climbs through moorland with increasingly dramatic rock formations as you near the summit. The final push involves some scrambling, nothing technical but enough to keep you engaged. Walkers and serious hikers will find genuine satisfaction here; families with young children might struggle with the gradient, though determined kids aged eight and up have managed it.

The summit itself is fairly compact, so don't expect sprawling views from some vast plateau. You get there, soak in the landscape, and either head straight back or linger a bit if the weather's playing ball. There's nothing up top - no café, no facilities - so bring water and snacks.

Wild Rose Holiday Park, though slightly further at 6 miles, also puts you within easy striking distance. Both are decent spots to use as a home base for exploring the Eden Valley.
