Barley Grove Picnic & Viewpoint

Pull off the road near Bideford and you'll find Barley Grove - a proper working viewpoint rather than some manicured tourist spot. It's essentially a cleared area with benches where you can spread out a picnic and watch the Devon countryside roll away beneath you. The views are the main draw here, and they're decent without being dramatic - rolling fields, distant trees, the kind of thing that makes you understand why people move to this corner of the world.

Walkers benefit most from stopping here during a longer ramble, though families with young kids will appreciate the low-key setup and safe parking. There's no facility nonsense, which is either a point in its favour or against it depending on your patience threshold. You'll need to bring your own food and expect zero amenities. The spot works best on clear days when the visibility actually justifies the effort; on grey Devon days it's just a field with a view of another field.

It's genuinely free and you can stay as long as you fancy - perfect for a 20-minute breather or a proper lunch stop. Given its proximity to Owl Valley Glamping and Broad Park, both excellent bases for the area, it slots nicely into a wider exploration of North Devon. Neither site is far away, so it's a realistic addition to a day out rather than a standalone destination. Worth the detour if you're in the region, but don't make a special trip.
