Barking Park

The Thames Path cuts right through Barking Park, and that's actually the best reason to visit. You're looking at 86 acres of proper east London green space - grassland, trees, and genuine wildlife habitat rather than the manicured gardens you get closer to the West End.

What strikes you first is how wild it feels despite being minutes from urban sprawl. There's a real sense of getting away from things, even though you haven't gone far. The wetland areas attract birds year-round, and if you time it right in spring you'll catch migrating species. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most out of it, though families with older kids do fine on the main paths. Younger children might find it a bit sparse - there's nature here but not theme park excitement.

Access is free and unrestricted, though facilities are minimal so bring water. Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk; many people do the park as part of a longer Thames Path ramble rather than treating it as a destination in itself. The Abbey Wood Experience Freedom Glamping site is just four miles away, making this a solid addition to a park-based weekend if you're camping nearby.

Best visited outside peak summer weekends when it's too crowded. Early autumn gives you clearer light and fewer people. If you're after dramatic views or visitor facilities, you'll be disappointed - but if you want actual green space with genuine ecological value, it delivers.
