Bardfield Saling, Little Saling: St Peter & St Paul

The church sits quietly at the heart of Little Saling, a village that time has largely overlooked - which is precisely why it's worth the visit. St Peter & St Paul is a proper medieval church, all flint and stone, with the kind of worn bell tower you'd expect from Essex countryside that's been farming the same fields for about eight hundred years.

Inside, it's that particular shade of cool and still that only old churches manage. The nave is modest, the furnishings honest rather than grand. You'll find the usual medieval traces - some decent medieval glass if the light's right, and the sort of memorials that tell you more about local families than any guidebook could.

This is one for walkers and history types rather than a draw-in-the-crowds sort of place. You're looking at thirty minutes here, maybe forty if you're reading every inscription. The real appeal is the setting - genuinely remote by Essex standards - and the fact you can actually get in (many small rural churches are now locked between services). The nearest proper town is Braintree, about seven miles west.

If you're camping at Hill Farm campsite just down the road, this makes a pleasant afternoon leg-stretch. Pair it with a walk through the surrounding farmland - there's nothing dramatic about the landscape, but it's quietly agreeable, the sort of walking that lets your head clear. Worth the detour if you're already in the area; don't drive specifically from elsewhere.
