Bar Hill

Standing at 409 metres, this modest Lowlands peak offers surprisingly good views across the Solway Firth without requiring serious hillwalking credentials. The ascent from Lockerbie takes about an hour each way, following well-worn paths that never get too technical - though proper walking boots are still sensible given the often boggy ground.

Families with older children will find it manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky scramble to the summit cairn. The reward is a panoramic sweep taking in the Lake District fells to the south and, on clear days, glimpses of the Isle of Man.

Walking enthusiasts often combine Bar Hill with nearby Burnswark Hill for a longer day out, while casual visitors content themselves with the single peak. There's no entry fee, naturally, and parking at the base is free if limited.

Timing matters here - the exposed summit can be brutal in winter winds, while summer brings midges that'll test your patience. Spring and autumn hit the sweet spot for comfortable walking conditions.
