Bar Hill Church

The round tower catches you off guard on the flat Cambridgeshire landscape - it's not what you expect to find five miles outside Cambridge. Bar Hill Church is one of England's oldest structures, with that distinctive Norman tower dating back to around 1040. It's genuinely striking, this circular design, and walking round it you understand why medieval builders chose the shape: stronger, more stable on marshy ground.

Inside, it's modest but honest. No gilt, no crowds, no gift shop. The nave's small and intimate, with original stonework you can actually touch. It appeals most to architecture enthusiasts and anyone seriously interested in Norman England - casual tourists will appreciate it for ten minutes, then head back to Cambridge. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already into church history.

It's free to visit, though you'll need to check if it's locked when you arrive (many rural churches are these days). Allow twenty minutes to half an hour, longer if you're photographing the tower. The surrounding churchyard is peaceful, pleasant for a short walk.

If you're camping at Cuckoo Fen or Crystal Lakes nearby, it's a reasonable detour - close enough for a morning visit before heading into Cambridge proper. It won't eat into your holiday time, and the drive across the fens is rather pleasant. Best tackled on a clear day when the tower's proper photogenic. Not essential, but if you're into medieval churches, absolutely worth the short trip from your base.
