Bannockburn Cairn

The cairn sits on a rise just south of Stirling, marking the spot where Robert the Bruce's army smashed the English forces in 1314. It's a proper historic site - you're standing on ground that changed Scotland's entire trajectory, which does something to you when you're actually there.

What you get is a substantial stone cairn with an equestrian statue of the Bruce himself, looking suitably martial. The surrounding grassland opens out nicely, and on a clear day you can see across to the Wallace Monument. There's interpretive signage that actually bothers to explain what happened here and why it mattered - not just "Battle happened, people died" but the real political weight of it.

History enthusiasts will spend a good hour absorbing the context and walking the grounds. Families with kids tend to burn through it faster unless you've got young history buffs in tow. The site's free and open all year, though you'll want daylight to properly appreciate the views across the valley.

It fits naturally into a Stirling park holiday - Witches Craig Caravan & Camping Park sits just four miles away and makes an excellent base. Combine this with the castle and Wallace Monument for a solid three-point Scottish history circuit. Don't expect massive crowds or visitor facilities, which is rather the point. It's honest ground, quietly powerful, and worth the detour if you're in the area.
