Bancroft Recreation Ground is the sort of place locals have known for years but visitors often miss entirely - a decent green lung with tree-lined paths, open grass for a kickabout, and enough room to actually breathe.

It's straightforward, really. Football pitches take up one section, then you've got your typical park infrastructure - benches, paths that meander without going anywhere special, the occasional dog walker. On a decent day it's pleasant enough for a stroll between other Hitchin attractions, though don't expect dramatic views or rare birds. Kids can run off steam here without fuss. The walking paths are gentle, so it suits all ages.

Free, naturally, and there's no particular time constraint - pop in for twenty minutes or stay longer if you fancy a sit-down. Summer weekends get busier with families, so early morning or weekday visits are calmer if you prefer quiet.

If you're staying at Baldock Park Homes or Radwell Lake campsite - both within five miles - this fills a gap nicely on an off-day, though it's not a destination unto itself. Pair it with a walk into central Hitchin proper, which has far more going on historically and commercially. The rec ground works best as a breather between other activities rather than a reason to travel specially.
