Balvenie Distillery

The Balvenie sits just outside Keith in Aberdeenshire, and walking up to the distillery feels proper. You're standing in front of one of Scotland's few places where they still do things the old-fashioned way - they have their own cooperage on-site, meaning the craftspeople who make the barrels work right there next to the stills. That alone sets it apart from most distilleries you'll visit.

Inside, the tours are excellent. They don't rush you through, and the guides actually know their stuff rather than just reciting a script. You'll see the copper stills, the malting floors, and if you time it right, the coopers at work hammering hoops onto new casks. The whole experience takes around two hours, give or take, depending on which tour you pick. They offer different levels - some longer, some shorter - so you can choose what suits your pace.

The tasting at the end is where most people linger. The whisky itself is consistently good, though you're paying for it. Admission isn't cheap, but it's fair value if you're genuinely interested in how whisky gets made rather than just wanting a quick dram.

It's a solid half-day out if you're staying nearby - Hillside Havens is barely a mile away, so it's an easy drive. Families with older kids who can handle a proper distillery tour will get plenty from it. Younger children tend to lose interest once you're past the initial shiny bits. Go on a weekday if possible; weekends bring coach parties from Aberdeen.
