Ballywalter Presbyterian Church

A substantial stone church sitting quietly on the outskirts of Newtownards, Ballywalter Presbyterian Church is the sort of place you'll stumble upon if you're exploring the Ards peninsula properly rather than rushing through. Built in 1820, it's a proper bit of rural ecclesiastical architecture - all solid grey stone and straightforward Presbyterian dignity, nothing showy about it.

The interior is what makes it worth the stop. High ceilings, original timber work, and the kind of light that Presbyterian chapels somehow always manage to capture. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes inside, half an hour if you're genuinely interested in 19th-century craftsmanship and local history. The churchyard itself is worth a wander - headstones go back generations, tells you quite a lot about who settled this part of County Down.

It's free to visit, though it's worth checking ahead if you want to see inside - sometimes it's locked outside service times. The church is only a mile or so from Springvale Holiday Park and Sandycove, so if you're basing yourself at either of those for a caravan holiday, this makes for a quiet morning before heading to the coast or down to Millisle way.
