Ballycrune Lough

The water here is genuinely still - the kind of stillness that makes you want to whisper. Ballycrune Lough sits just outside Hillsborough, a modest freshwater lake that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet visit.

It's a proper spot for walkers and birdwatchers. The paths around the shore are straightforward enough, and you'll spot coots, mallards, and if you're lucky, something rarer. There's something about a lake in Northern Ireland - the light hits it differently than you'd expect, especially on an overcast afternoon when the clouds mirror perfectly in the water.

You won't spend hours here unless you're serious about ornithology or just need a break from the car. An hour's walk round the perimeter is ample. The main appeal is the peace - genuinely quiet, no gift shops, no crowds. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited; there's no play area or facilities that I could spot, just water and reeds and the occasional fisherman.

It works well as a leg-stretcher if you're staying at Lakeside View Caravan Park nearby, which is only a mile or so away. The park itself has the expected facilities, and Ballycrune adds a proper natural element to your stay. If you're in Hillsborough itself - nice market town, worth an afternoon - this is an easy addition to your route. Admission is free, and there's nowhere to pay anyway. Go early morning for the best light and the least company.
