Ballee Presbyterian Church

The modest grey stone church sitting just outside Downpatrick has been quietly standing since 1659, and there's something rather moving about its simplicity. Ballee Presbyterian Church isn't flashy - no soaring arches or stained glass theatrics - but it's genuinely old, which counts for something in these parts.

What you get is a proper glimpse into how people actually worshipped three and a half centuries ago. The interior is spare and dignified, with that particular smell of old wood and stone that you either love or find a bit austere. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretive panels explaining everything to death. You show up, you have a look, you reflect on the fact that folk have been coming here since the 1600s, and that's rather the point.

It's most rewarding if you're genuinely interested in Presbyterian history or early Irish church architecture. Families with restless kids might find twenty minutes stretches into an uncomfortable eternity. Walkers passing through Downpatrick could easily work it in - it's accessible and peaceful, the kind of place that settles your head after a longer route.

Coneyisland Caravan Park sits just a couple of miles away, making this a decent add-on if you're spending a few days in the area exploring the Mourne foothills. Worth the detour if you're into this sort of thing; not worth going out of your way for if medieval churches leave you cold.
