Ballard Down

The walk up Ballard Down is steep, proper steep, and worth every huffing breath. You're looking at chalk cliffs that drop straight into the sea, with views across Swanage Bay that'll make you forget you're knackered. On a clear day you can see right along the Dorset coast - it's the sort of vantage point that makes you understand why people fought over this land for centuries.

Getting up there takes about 20-30 minutes from the car park near Swanage, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The path is well-trodden but unforgiving if you're not used to hills. Walkers absolutely love it, and families with older kids will find the challenge rewarding rather than miserable. Young children or anyone with dodgy knees might struggle, to be honest.

The clifftop itself is vast and windswept - bring a jacket even in summer, because you'll feel the wind up there. There's a small stone shelter if the weather turns mean. No facilities, no café, no shop, so come prepared with water and snacks.

If you're staying at Ulwell Holiday Park or Swanage Bay View, you're within walking distance, though the hill negates the 'walking distance' part for most people. Burnbake Forest Lodges is only a couple of miles away too. It's the sort of place that breaks up a park holiday nicely - gives you a proper outdoor adventure without needing a full day commitment.
