Baldock Road Recreation Ground

A modest slice of green on the eastern edge of Baldock, this recreation ground does exactly what it says on the tin - it's where locals come to stretch their legs and let the dog have a proper run. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or gift shop, just grassland, trees, and the sort of peace you get when you're not fighting crowds.

The appeal is straightforward. There are footpaths threading through, good for a brisk walk if you're staying at Ashridge Farm just down the road - the campsite's five miles away, so easily reachable for a morning ramble. Families with young kids will find it adequate for letting off steam, though it won't hold attention for hours. Dog walkers absolutely swear by it. If you're into birds or spotting wildlife, go early when it's quiet.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and you can pop in whenever suits. Allow an hour for a proper explore if you're not just cutting through. Spring and early summer are lovely - the place comes alive with wildflowers if they've not over-managed it.

It's the sort of spot you use as a top-up rather than a destination in itself. Stick it in your Baldock itinerary if you've got time, maybe combine it with a walk into town itself. Decent way to kill a morning when the weather's on your side, nothing more.
