Bakers Hill

The climb up Bakers Hill rewards you with one of those views that makes you forget the leg-work getting there. The paths are decent underfoot, though after wet weather you'll want proper boots. Families with older kids (say, eight plus) will manage fine, though younger ones might find it a slog. History enthusiasts should note the mining heritage scattered about these hills - this area's been picked over for limestone and other minerals for centuries.

The real charm here is the relative lack of crowds. You won't be queuing or paying fancy entry fees. It's free, it's genuine countryside, and it connects well with walking routes across the area. If you're staying in the region for a few days, it's exactly the sort of thing that fills a gap between bigger attractions. Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities at the top - bring what you need. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light and the quietest experience.
