Baile Hill

A grassy mound rising sharply from the flat terrain near York - that's Baile Hill, and it's one of those places that stops you mid-walk with a jolt of "oh, that's actually medieval." William the Conqueror's forces threw up this motte-and-bailey in 1068, just days after Stamford Bridge, using it as a foothold to control the city. You can walk straight up it, no charge, no gates, no faffing about with opening hours. The views across York are decent once you're on top, though the real payoff is simply standing there understanding what it meant - a statement of Norman dominance, built in haste, commanding the river crossing.

It won't take long. Twenty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely fascinated by Norman military engineering. Archaeologists have dug it over thoroughly, and the site interpretation is minimal - bring a guidebook or look it up beforehand if you want the full story. The ground can get muddy after rain, so decent shoes are sensible.

For walkers staying at Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park, it's a straightforward detour on a loop around York's walls and riverside paths. History types will find it genuinely interesting; kids might enjoy the scramble up. It's not a day-long attraction, but it's free, it's there, and if you're already in the area it would be daft to miss it.
