Backlane Wood

Backlane Wood sits just outside Welwyn Garden City and is exactly the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and be genuinely glad you did. It's a proper working woodland - nothing flashy, no visitor centre or car park theatre. You get old-growth trees, shadowy paths that feel genuinely quiet, and the kind of undergrowth that tells you this is a real forest, not a manicured park.

Walkers will get the most from this. The paths wind through without being obvious, so there's a genuine sense of exploration, and it's close enough to Welwyn Garden City that you can knock it out as an afternoon sortie without much planning. Families with older kids will find it engaging - there's enough to poke around in, fallen logs to investigate, that sort of thing. Younger ones might get restless after thirty minutes unless you're really into spotting birds or mushrooms.

The woodland floor is interesting in autumn especially, and the canopy in summer is thick enough that you'll actually get relief from the heat. Allow an hour for a proper walk, less if you're just passing through. It's free access as far as I can tell.
