Auldhame Castle

The ruins stand on a clifftop east of Dunbar, commanding views over the Firth of Forth that make the scramble worthwhile. Auldhame Castle is basically a jumble of stone walls now - nothing fancy, nothing reconstructed - but there's real atmosphere in what's left of it. Built in the 14th century, it belonged to the Hepburns, a family with serious weight in Scottish politics. You'll find crumbling defensive walls, a vague sense of where rooms once were, and enough of the fortification layout to imagine how imposing it must have looked when people actually lived here.

The setting does most of the heavy lifting. Rocky coastline, wind, isolation - this feels properly old in a way that tidied-up castles never quite manage. It's not a destination for the heritage-obsessed alone; walkers love it because the coastal path is tremendous, and the ruins sit naturally within a longer hike along these cliffs.

Getting there requires a bit of effort. You'll need to find the unmarked path from the cliff edge - not immediately obvious, and frankly a bit rough underfoot. Budget an hour including the walk down and back. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no admission charge as far as anyone can tell. Go in decent weather or you'll spend it squinting into fog.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park, it's under six miles away and makes a decent afternoon outing when the weather plays ball. Don't expect crowds or facilities. Expect genuine quiet and views that stretch for miles.
