Auckland Castle

The castle dominates Bishop Auckland's skyline with a presence that feels genuinely imposing - a proper seat of power rather than a crumbling ruin. You're walking into twelve centuries of history here, from Norman keeps to palatial eighteenth-century rooms that the Prince Bishops kitted out when they had serious money to spend.

Inside, it's the art collection and the state rooms that justify the visit. The Spanish paintings are unexpectedly good, and there's something rather moving about standing in rooms where actual decisions got made. The chapel is worth lingering in - all that light and space and decoration feels less like a museum piece and more like somewhere people genuinely gathered.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to sink their teeth into. Families with younger kids might struggle past the first hour unless they're already keen on period rooms and portraits. The grounds are genuinely pleasant for a wander though, and you can eat reasonably well on site without having to trek back into town.

Allocation two to three hours minimum if you're going to do it properly. Check the website for current entry fees and opening hours before you head over from Stag Park Caravan Site or Cragwood - both are well-positioned for exploring the wider area. It's a decent anchor point for a Durham holiday if you're basing yourself in the northeast, though don't expect to be blown away if castles aren't already your thing.
