Auchnacraig Hill

The walk up Auchnacraig Hill rewards you with proper Highland views without the brutal slog of the bigger peaks. Starting from near Ballater, it's a straightforward climb that takes most people around two hours up and back down - nothing that'll wreck your legs but enough to feel like you've earned a decent vista.

What you get at the top is a clear sight across the Dee valley towards the Cairngorms, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the effort feel worthwhile. The path itself is well-trodden, following a rough track most of the way, so it's manageable for reasonably fit walkers without needing serious kit. You won't find crowds up here either, which is the real advantage when you're trying to escape the busier trails further west.

This is exactly the sort of hill that slots nicely into a week based around Ballater Caravan Park. Do it as a morning walk, be back for lunch, and you've got the afternoon free for exploring Ballater itself or heading into Braemar. Families with older kids will find it doable, though younger ones might find the return journey a bit tedious. It's free, obviously, and there's parking near the trailhead.

Go early if possible. The light's better and you'll have the hillside mostly to yourself. Bring decent boots - it can get boggy lower down after rain.
