Auchmountain Glen

The walk up Auchmountain Glen, just inland from Craigendoran, is one of those Scottish affairs that looks modest on paper but rewards you properly once you're in it. You're threading through a genuine ravine with high banks either side, the burn running below, and the whole thing feels properly remote despite being minutes from the village.

It's a straightforward glen walk - no scrambling required - though the path can be boggy after rain and you'll want decent boots. Most people allow an hour to an hour and a half, depending on how far you fancy pushing. The appeal is simple: it's green, quiet, and feels like proper countryside within spitting distance of civilisation. Families with older kids will get on well here. Younger ones might find it a bit dull if they're expecting waterfalls or dramatic crags - it's understated, really.

No fees, no facilities, just a start point and your own pace. The best light is mid-afternoon when the glen isn't in shadow. Winter clears some of the undergrowth and makes the walk feel more open, though summer is greener.

If you're based at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park, this slots in nicely as a half-day outing. It's not a showstopper attraction on its own - worth doing if you're in the area, less worth driving across Argyll for specifically - but it rounds out a proper Cowal walking holiday without any fuss.
