Auchinoon Hill

The walk up Auchinoon Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to make your calves complain. Starting from near Newbridge, you're looking at maybe twenty minutes of proper climbing through scrubby woodland before the view opens up properly. Once you're up there, the Scottish Lowlands spread out in front of you - rolling green, no drama, just solid countryside as far as you can see.

It's the kind of spot that rewards you for the effort without asking too much of it. You get that satisfying moment when you clear the trees and realise you've genuinely climbed something. On a clear day the visibility is decent, though don't expect dramatic peaks - this is gentle terrain, even if the ascent feels a bit steeper than you'd bargained for.

Walkers with young legs will crack on and be back in under an hour. Older hikers might take a leisurely ninety minutes with a sit-down at the top. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, just you and the view. Free to access, naturally. The real value here is as a half-day outing if you're staying at Linwater Caravan Park nearby - close enough that you won't waste your morning driving, proper enough to feel like you've done something on a hill. Go on a morning when the light's good and the midges haven't woken up properly yet.
