Auchindoun Castle

You're looking at what's left of a proper fortress - a five-storey L-shaped tower that's somehow still standing after 500 years of Scottish weather and history. Auchindoun Castle sits on a hilltop near Keith, and what strikes you first is how exposed it feels, commanding views across Aberdeenshire like it was designed for watching trouble arrive from miles away.

Inside, the ruins are skeletal but impressive. Stone walls remain largely intact, and if you're handy with stairs, you can climb up through what was once someone's grand residence. What you get now is essentially a shell - but it's the kind of ruin that rewards exploration rather than just a glance from the car park.
