The Atkinson Gallery sits in Street, a market town in Somerset that's better known for its shoe factories than its art scene - which makes finding this place something of a pleasant surprise. It's a proper small-town gallery, the sort where you can actually have a conversation with someone who works there rather than just shuffling past crowds. The exhibitions rotate, so what's on depends when you visit, but it tends to focus on contemporary work and local artists - nothing too challenging, just good quality stuff that rewards a proper look.

You'll want to allow about an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if there's an exhibition that really grabs you. It's the kind of spot that works well on a wet afternoon or as a break from the campsite if you're staying at Bobsfield or Old Oaks Touring nearby. The gallery is free to get in, which is always a good start. Street itself is compact enough to wander around afterwards - the High Street has decent enough cafes and the shoe heritage bits if you're into that sort of thing. As a day-trip addition to a broader Somerset holiday it works fine, though it's not the reason you'd plan a whole trip.
