Asterleigh Wood

The beech and oak trees here run thick enough that even on a bright day, you're walking through proper dappled shade. Asterleigh Wood is the sort of place you find by accident when exploring the lanes around Chipping Norton, not because it's signposted everywhere, but because it's genuinely worth a wander.

It's a straightforward woodland walk - nothing elaborate, no visitor centre or facilities that I could see - just trees, paths, and the occasional clearing where light floods through. The undergrowth is dense in places, sparse in others, and it feels genuinely wild rather than manicured. You're looking at maybe an hour here if you meander, less if you know what you're doing. In autumn the beech leaves turn golden and drop everywhere; spring brings bluebells if you time it right.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're the exploring type. But walkers and anyone after a proper woodland fix will rate it. It's free, as far as I can tell - no gates, no charges. The paths are decent underfoot though they can get boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

If you're staying at Chipping Norton Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Cotswold Hills Country Park, both within an easy drive, this makes a natural morning outing before heading into the town itself. It's not a destination on its own, but paired with the Cotswolds' stone villages and better-known attractions, it's a solid addition to a walking holiday.
