Ashleworth Ham nature reserve

Ashleworth Ham is a proper wildlife haven tucked into a bend of the River Severn, just outside Gloucester. It's a working farm too, which makes it different from your typical nature reserve - you'll see cattle grazing alongside the rare birds and wetland plants that make this place genuinely special.

The meadows here flood in winter, which sounds like a disaster until you realise that's exactly what draws in the wading birds and wildfowl. Bring binoculars and patience rather than expecting manicured paths and viewing platforms. This is proper rewilding, not nature reserve theatre. Spring and autumn are the best times if you're serious about birdwatching - curlews, lapwings, and snipe are regular visitors.

Walkers get the most from Ashleworth Ham. There's a footpath that loops the reserve, and while it's not challenging, you'll want decent boots in winter when things get properly muddy. Allow a couple of hours, longer if you're photographing or just stood watching the light change across the water.

It slots nicely into a Gloucestershire park holiday - Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site sits just six miles away and makes a solid base. The reserve is free to access, which is worth knowing. It's not the kind of place that'll wow your phone with Instagram shots, but if you actually want to see what a working English river meadow looks like when it's left largely to its own devices, you won't find anything better nearby.
