Ashdown Dog Paddock

The Ashdown Dog Paddock sits on the Wiltshire downs near Wantage, and it's exactly what the name suggests - a proper spot where dogs have run free for years. It's not a manicured visitor attraction with gift shops and information boards. Instead, it's a working patch of downland where locals bring their mutts to burn off energy, and that's rather the point.

You'll find open grassland, the kind of terrain that makes sense for off-lead running, with enough space to let a border collie actually do what it was bred for. The views across the downs are decent without being dramatic - more honest countryside than Instagram fodder. Walkers and dog owners get the most from this one. If you've got children who aren't the outdoorsy type, they might fidget after twenty minutes.

There's no admission charge, no facilities to speak of, and no set opening hours because it's not that sort of place. You turn up when you want. Allow an hour if you're exercising a dog, half that if you're just passing through for the view.

What makes it work for a park holiday is proximity. Evelyns Garden Glamping and Nordic Glamping at Botswicky are both within four miles, and Lorne Hill Farm sits at five and a half miles. If you're based at any of these - particularly the glamping spots - the paddock serves as a genuine local dog run rather than a tourist attraction. It's the sort of place that reminds you what downland England actually does, away from the marketing.
