Ash Tree

There's an ancient ash tree standing near Durham that's genuinely worth seeking out if you're in the area. It's one of those landmarks that doesn't announce itself loudly - no visitor centre, no signage telling you how old it is - but once you find it, you understand why it's still talked about locally.

The tree itself is gnarled and substantial, the kind of specimen that makes you pause and actually look at something for a moment. Allow an hour or so if you're combining it with a walk elsewhere in the area. Summer's the obvious choice, though honestly it works any time of year.

If you're staying at The Gables Pod Camping or Eden Grange Glamping - both excellent bases just outside Durham - this is a decent half-day addition to a park holiday. It's close enough that you won't waste half the day driving, but far enough that it feels like you've actually gone somewhere. Pair it with a walk around the wider countryside and you've got a proper afternoon sorted.
