Ash the Foxes Field

You'll find this small fox sanctuary just outside Dunfermline, where the main draw is exactly what the name promises - foxes, and plenty of them. Ash the Foxes Field is a working rescue and education centre rather than a traditional zoo, so expect close encounters with animals that have been rehomed or injured and can't return to the wild.

The setup is fairly intimate. You walk through paddocks and viewing areas where the foxes roam with decent space around them. It's educational without being heavy-handed - staff will explain their individual stories if you ask, and you genuinely feel like you're learning something rather than just gawping through glass.

This works brilliantly for families with primary-school-age kids who are fascinated by predators but might find bigger zoos overwhelming. Teenagers often find it a bit slight - you're looking at maybe ninety minutes maximum. Adults who care about animal welfare tend to appreciate the ethos here, as it's clearly run by people who understand fox behaviour rather than just wanting to show off animals.
