Ash Plantation

A dense woodland of ash trees stretching across Cambridgeshire, east of Cambridge - the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan a trip around. The walk through is straightforward enough, with paths threading between mature ash and a mix of other deciduous growth. In spring, the floor carpets itself with bluebells. Summer's thick canopy keeps things cool when Cambridge gets stuffy.

You're looking at maybe an hour here, two if you're the type who stops to identify every bird call. Dog walkers get proper use from this place - space to roam without the formality of a managed park. It's less scenic spectacle, more genuine forest feel. The trees themselves are the point. No facilities, no cafe, no car park amenities that I could find - just woodland.

Cambridge sits close enough that you could combine this with town time, though it works better as a breathing space if you're staying at Piggles Retreat nearby. That's a proper family spot if you're planning a longer stay - the plantation itself won't hold children for hours, but it's brilliant for a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere.

Free to access, as far as I could tell. Go when the weather's decent. Winter's muddy and bleak. October through early November, when the ash turns that warm brown-gold, is genuinely lovely. If you want managed woodland experience with facilities, look elsewhere. If you want actual forest - quiet, real, a bit unglamorous - this delivers.
