Ash Hill

The earthworks at Ash Hill are modest but genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking at. It's a Romano-British settlement site near Market Rasen, sitting on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, and what remains are the buried foundations and ditches of an occupation that ran for centuries. You won't find manicured gardens or information boards here - this is archaeology as it actually is: bumps and hollows in a field that require a bit of imagination to decode.

History buffs will get the most from it, especially those interested in how ordinary people lived during the Roman period rather than the grand villas you read about. The site itself demands little time - perhaps half an hour if you're taking photographs or sketching the layout - but that brevity isn't a weakness. It's the kind of place that rewards a quiet walk and some proper thinking about what was happening here two thousand years ago.

Since it's an open archaeological site rather than a visitor attraction with facilities, you'll need to check conditions locally before heading out, particularly after heavy rain. It works brilliantly as part of a wider Wolds exploration. Both Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape and Into the Wild Glamping are close enough for a morning venture, and the landscape itself - rolling, agricultural, genuinely quiet - is worth the drive to Market Rasen on its own.
