Art Gallery Phone Box

A telephone box stuffed with art in Seaton sounds like someone's had a laugh, but this is genuinely brilliant. It's a proper working phone box - the red Victorian kind - that's been converted into a tiny rotating gallery. Pop in at any hour and you'll find whatever's currently on display squeezed into the booth. The work changes regularly, so it's always worth a look if you're wandering through town.

It takes about five minutes to view, which sounds throwaway until you actually stop and really look at what's been carefully hung in there. Artists use the constraint of the space as part of the work itself, so you get clever stuff - not just prints shoved in for the sake of it. There's something rather lovely about stumbling upon it while grabbing a coffee or heading to the beach.

This works best if you're staying nearby - not worth a special trip from miles away, but absolutely worth knowing about. If you're based at Beer Head Holiday Park or Oakdown, both close enough for a poke around Seaton's seafront, the phone box becomes part of your wandering. It's free, it's open all hours (you can peer in at midnight if you're that way inclined), and it proves you don't need a grand building to do something interesting with art. Kids find it odd in a good way - the novelty of an actual working phone booth pulls them in first, then they actually engage with what's inside.
