Arrow Valley lake

Arrow Valley Lake sits just outside Alcester and is genuinely one of those places locals cherish while passing visitors miss entirely. It's a working gravel pit that's been transformed into a proper nature reserve, with two lakes ringed by woodland and reed beds that attract everything from kingfishers to great crested grebes.

The walking loop around the main lake takes about forty-five minutes at a steady pace, and you'll spot wildlife constantly if you move quietly. There's a viewing platform that's worth the short detour, though honestly the best bit is the quieter eastern shore where you get proper sightings. Bring binoculars - birdwatchers will be in their element here, particularly in spring and autumn when migrants pass through.

For families with younger kids, it's a solid half-day outing. They can feed ducks by the car park, though the walks aren't thrilling if you're after adventure playgrounds. It's free to access and open dawn to dusk year-round, which is the main appeal.
