Arena Field

You'll find Arena Field sitting just outside Hillsborough, a proper nature reserve that actually delivers on the promise of quiet countryside. It's the kind of place where you can walk without bumping into crowds, which makes a refreshing change if you're caravan-based at Lakeside View and fancy stretching your legs.

The reserve itself is grassland with woodland edges - nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. You get open views across the fields, decent bird spotting opportunities if you're into that sort of thing, and enough space to let kids burn off energy without worrying they'll wander onto a main road. The walking is straightforward; no scrambling or technical bits, just gentle paths through habitat that's been managed for wildlife.

Who'll get the most from it? Walkers wanting a quiet hour or so, families with young legs who need a gentle outing, and anyone serious about spotting birds and small mammals. You won't need crampons or hiking boots. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the lingering type.

The honest bit: it's not a day-long destination on its own. But if you're staying in the Hillsborough area, it's excellent as a morning walk before heading into town for lunch, or a late-afternoon meander when the light's soft. Combine it with nearby parks and you've got a solid nature-focused break. Free access, as far as I can tell, which doesn't hurt.
