Appleton Wiske St Mary's Church

The little medieval church sits quietly in Appleton Wiske village, about six miles south of Northallerton, and it's exactly the sort of place that rewards a quiet detour. St Mary's has stood here since the 12th century, with its sturdy stone walls and modest tower speaking more through presence than grandeur.

Inside, the real interest lies in the details - original medieval features survive where you'd expect Victorian restoration to have swept them away. The chancel and nave retain period character, and there's something genuinely moving about standing in a space where parishioners have worshipped for nearly 900 years. It's the sort of church that appeals to architecture enthusiasts and history walkers far more than casual visitors. Expect to spend 20 minutes here, maximum.

Admission appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally given the small size. The church keys are typically held by residents in the village, so you may need to ask around if it's locked. There's no dedicated car park, just roadside parking near the church.

If you're staying at either Cote Ghyll Caravan Park or Whorlton Pods - both excellent bases nearby - this makes a pleasant morning walk from your pitch. The surrounding countryside is proper rolling North Yorkshire farmland, so you could easily combine it with a longer village ramble. On its own, though, it's brief. Pair it with exploring Northallerton's market square or other local churches to make a proper outing of it.
