Applemore Health and Leisure

A proper sports facility on the outskirts of Southampton, Applemore Health and Leisure is the sort of place you'd take the kids if they need burning out on a rainy afternoon. It's got swimming pools, gym equipment, and indoor courts - the bread and butter of a leisure centre that's been serving the local area for years.

The indoor pool is warm enough for younger children, and there's enough space that it doesn't feel rammed even during school holidays. If you're staying at either Matley Wood or Roundhill - both excellent campsites within striking distance - this makes a solid backup plan when the weather turns. The older kids might actually want to use the gym facilities properly, which is rare enough to note.

It's not a destination attraction. You won't be driving an hour out of your way for it. But if you're based locally for a week and the forecast is grim, it's convenient and does what it says on the tin. Free admission depends on membership status, so worth checking ahead online or phoning direct before you turn up. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing multiple activities.

Couples and serious swimmers might find it rather basic compared to bigger leisure complexes elsewhere, but families who just need their kids properly tired out will find it useful enough.
