Apley Pool

The water here is proper still on most days, reflecting the sky like a mirror. Apley Pool sits quietly in the Shropshire countryside near Coalbrookdale, far enough from the main roads that you actually feel removed from things. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - you're looking at a lake that's been part of the local scene for generations, surrounded by mature trees and open fields.

Walkers get the most from it. There's no dramatic loop or marked trail that's famous, but that's the point. You come here for the peace and the light on the water at different times of day. The pool itself draws local fishermen and the occasional birdwatcher. It's not a dramatic vista that'll dominate your Instagram feed, but it's the sort of place you remember when you're back home and need to think of somewhere quiet.

If you're staying at Irongorge Camping or Shropshire Glamping - both excellent spots in the area - Apley Pool works well as a gentle morning walk before heading elsewhere. Allow an hour to wander and sit if you're not in a rush. There's no visitor infrastructure, no car park to speak of, so you need to actually want to be here rather than be passing through.

It pairs well with the broader Coalbrookdale area, which has more structured attractions nearby. But come here if you want to step away from those for a bit and just be around water and trees.
